Defining Depression

The Oxford Dictionary defines depression as a pathological state of extreme dejection or melancholy, characterized by a mood of hopelessness and feelings of inadequacy, often with physical symptoms. A reduction in vitality, vigor, and spirits.

For many people, depression is biochemical. But as with stress and anxiety, certain coping skills can help and may even eliminate your symptoms. Anyone going through challenge and change feels some depression that will pass in time. But if you’re having suicidal thoughts, call a doctor immediately. In some cases, medications can be a temporary or long-term solution for depression. Discuss this with your doctor so you can make a decision based on an accurate diagnosis and educated judgment.
